Type species. Ocypoda bispinosa Lamarck, 1801 , junior synonym of Cancer rhomboides Linnaeus, 1758 , Cancer angulata Pennant, 1777 , Ocypoda bispinosa Lamarck, 1801 , Ocipode [sic] longimana Latreille, 1803 , Goneplax rhombo ї dalis Risso, 1827, and Gelasimus bellii Couch, 1838 ; gender feminine. Name 313 placed in Official List of Names in Zoology in Opinion 85, Direction 37 (p. 15) (see Manning & Holthuis 1981: 163; Melville & Smith 1987: 99).

Remarks. The genus Goneplax emend. is considerably restricted here. Besides its type species G. rhomboides (Linnaeus, 1758) and the new species described herein ( G. clevai n. sp.), it consists only of one American species, G. sigsbei (A. Milne-Edwards, 1880) . Another species from the East Atlantic ( Carcinoplax barnardi Capart, 1951 ) will be assigned to Goneplax by the second author (Castro in press), while all the Indo-West Pacific species referred to Goneplax , whose placement in the genus was originally questioned by Guinot (1969 b: 522), are to be excluded and assigned to other genera (Castro in press).
