Diagnosis. Distinguished from other subgenera of Synagris by: larger size, inner margin of mandible dentate, outer surface of mandible with ridges, labrum not apically narrowed, clypeus variable in shape and sculpture, labial palpi with second and third segments separated, frons with a M-shaped elevated area, pronotal carina sinuous with a median raised portion (not raised in S. fasciata ), mesoscutum with a posteromedian raised area, metanotum with conical protuberances, mesepimeron projecting, posterior face of propodeum with a basal depression and a longitudinal carina (absent in some species), propodeum with transverse striae (absent in some species), T1 broadly pyriform, S1 without arched carina, S1 with raised posterolateral corners, S2 bulging basally in lateral view, tarsal claws without basal lobe, prestigma two times as long as pterostigma (as long as pterostigma in S. abyssinica ), F11 of male short and conical and not reaching apex of F8, male vertex strongly enlarged (similar to female in some species), male mid femur normal (flattened and convex posteriorly in S. analis and S. biplagiata ), digitus foliaceous.
