Plants dioicous or autoicous, small; stem without hyalodermis, with 2 cells wide ventral merophyte; leaf insertion long, J-shaped; lobules strongly inflated, with a reduced first tooth and a hyaline papilla positioned distal to the prominent second lobule tooth; lobes entire, smooth, lobe cell walls with well-developed trigones, intermediate thickenings present, each lobe cell with 2–4(–6) rather small, subhomogeneous or indistinctly papillose to very finely segmented, subglobose (3–5 x 3–5 µm) to ellipsoidal (3–4 x 6–8 µm), colorless oil bodies; ocelli absent. Underleaves shallowly emarginate, with diverging, blunt lobes. Androecia in autoicous plants on short branches or terminal on longer branches in dioicous plants. Gynoecia without true subfloral innovations; bracts considerably larger than leaves; perianths terete, smooth, beak short, with neck of fertilized archegonium usually projecting through it.
