Betonica hirsuta Linnaeus View in CoL , Mantissa Plantarum Altera: 248. 1771.
"Habitat in Apenninis. D. Bassi hanc rescuscitavit." RCN: 4231.
Neotype (Cristofolini in Jarvis & al. in Taxon 50: 510. 2001): Italy. Apennines. " Betonica foliis hirsutis floribus purpureis amplissimis / Monti in Zan:46 / Betonica alpina incana purpurea / Barrel:Ico:340:" F. Bassi (BOLO).
Current name: Stachys pradica (Zanted.) Greuter & Pignatti View in CoL ( Lamiaceae ).
Note: Linnaeus provided a new diagnosis, cited a Mentzel polynomial in synonymy, and gave an extensive description. He added "Habitat in Apenninis. D. Bassi hanc rescuscitavit". Herb. Linn. 735.6 ( LINN), material from Allioni, is unannotated as to identity by Linnaeus, although Smith subsequently determined it (in sched.) as B. hirsuta . It is not accepted as original material for the name and, in the absence of any original elements, material from Fernandino Bassi’s collection (BOLO) was designated as a neotype by Cristofolini.
The epithet “hirsuta” is not available in Stachys because it is preoccupied by S. hirsuta Kunth (1817) . The current name was given as S. monieri (Gouan) P.W. Ball by Heywood (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 65: 356. 1972). However, Greuter & Pignatti (in Giorn. Bot. Ital. 113: 360-361. 1979) argued that Betonica monieri Gouan is a synonym of Stachys officinalis (L.) Trevis. , not of B. hirsuta , based on a study by Lacaita (in Nuovo Giorn. Bot. Ital., n.s., 28: 118-124. 1921). Greuter & Pignatti argued that B. pradica Zanted. is the next available name for the latter, and made the necessary combination.
