Triticum petraeum Visiani & Pančić (1862: 446) View in CoL
Type (lectotype designated here):—Illustration in Visiani & Pančić (1862: 451). ( Fig. 8)
Note:—No specimen pertaining to the original material could be found during our investigations. Since the illustration accompanynig the protologue is compatible with it and recognisable as pertaining to E. panormitanus , in accordance with the long-established concept of this taxon, we do not hesitate to select it as a lectotype. As we understand from two letters addressed to Visiani (28 June 1868 and 2 January 1866), in February 1864 Pančić received a specimen of Triticum panormitanum ( Parlatore 1840: 20) Bertoloni (1841: 780) from Agostino Todaro, at the time director of the Botanical Garden of Palermo, in Sicily. As soon as he had examined it, he suspected it to be a conspecific of T. petraeum , and he finally confirmed it in 1866, as is evident from a letter to Visiani. Thereafter, the latter name was always considered a heterotypic synonym of T. panormitanum , nowadays usually treated as Elymus panormitanus ( Parlatore 1840: 20) Tzvelev in Bobrov (1970: 27) (e.g. Euro+Med 2014).
