Scutimica transcarinata Ros-Farré & Pujade-Villar n. sp

( Figs 1b, 1d View FIGURE 1 , 2c, 2d View FIGURE 2 )

Type material. HOLOTYPE (♀) deposited in CNCI with the following labels: “ Brazil, Vila Vera, M. Grosso, 500 m, 12° 45' S, 55° 30' W, X/1973, M. Alvarenga ”, (white label), “ Scutimica transcarinata ♀ Ros-Farré & Pujade-Villar n. sp 2006” (red label). GoogleMaps

Diagnosis. This species differs from Scutimica flava based on the following characters: mesoscutum, which is transversally carinated in S. transcarinata and smooth in S. flava ; the pronotum is strongly prominent dorsally in S. transcarinata and not prominent in S. flava ; the face has a longitudinal carina, which is absent in S. flava .

Description. Length. Female: 3.0 mm.; male unknown.

Coloration. Head light brown on ventral half and medium brown dorsally, mandibles medium brown to black. Antennae light to medium brown. Mesonotum black dorsally, light brown laterally. Metanotum dark brown to black. Legs light brown except for the metatibia and metatarsi, which are darker.

Head. Frons with piliferous punctures, face with rugose sculpture and strong longitudinal carina reaching from dorsal end of clypeus to area between antennal foramina. Malar furrow coriaceous and narrow. Vertex in dorsal view rugose, posteriorly with strong oblique carinae and slightly rugose. Occiput smooth.

Antennae. Long and filiform. Antennal formula: 13(4): 7(3.5): 12(3): 10(5): 9(5): 9(5): 9(5): 9(5): 9(4): 8.5(5): 8(5): 7(5): 13(5). Placoid sensilae absent on basal half of F1 and F2, on dorsal half scarce; abundant from F3 to F11.

Mesosoma. Pronotum in lateral view with noticeable transversal carinae on dorsal 2/3; dorsal margin strongly projected and with median incision. Pronotal plate with small piliferous punctures and transverse carinae. Mesoscutum with coarse transversal carinae, shiny. Parascutal sulcus wide basally and narrower near dorsal margin. Median mesoscutal sulcus shorter than notauli and narrower, reaching the first 1/3 of mesoscutum. Notauli reaching between 1/2 and 2/3 length of mesoscutum, strongly divergent. Median mesoscutal line absent. Lateral basal impression conspicuous. Antero-admedian lines narrow, parallel, weak, short, reaching dorsal 1/8 of mesoscutum. Mesoscutum in lateral view straight, sloping downwards posteriorly. Scutellar foveae fairly deep, oblique. Scutellar disc rugose, lateral carinae present but difficult to observe. Mesoscutum 1.1 times scutellum length.

Forewing. Radial cell 2.2 times longer than wide.

Biology. Unknown.

Derivatio nominis. Name refers to the strong transversal carinae this species possesses on the mesoscutum.
