Hydrous (s. str.) triangularis (Say) ; Zaitzev 1908: 366.
Stethoxus subsulcatus LeConte, 1854: 221 . Synonymy: LeConte 1855: 367; Knisch 1924: 258.
Hydrous (Pagipherus) triangularis var. subsulcatus (LeConte) ; Kuwert 1893: 89.
Hydrophilus trisitis Motschulsky, 1859: 174 . Synonymy: Gemminger and Harold 1868: 476.
Material Examined. See Appendix 1.
Diagnosis. Size large (35–38 mm). Specimens often distinctly elongated and narrow relative to co-occurring species. Antennal cupule light in color with no to moderate elongation, ca. 1.5–2x as long as wide and not entirely covering first antennal club segment. Protarsal claws of males unequal in both size and shape. Terminal segment of protarsi greatly widened with outer margin forming an obtuse angle ( Fig. 2 View Figs ). The abdominal pubescence forms a distinctive “triangular” lateral margin on the glabrous region on each ventrite ( Fig. 6 View Figs .).
This species can be easily separated from other North American species by its elongated shape and very distinctive glabrous abdominal region.
