Diagnosis. Size very large (35–40 mm). Fifth abdominal ventrite with or without shallow to deep fovea on either side of medial line. Antennal cupule light in color and greatly elongated, about three times as long as wide and covering most of first and second antennal club segments. Protarsal claws of males strongly sexually dimorphic, in males the final segment of the protarsi greatly enlarged, about two and a half to three times as wide as preceding segment, creating a sharply acute angle on the outer margin. Abdominal pubescence restricted to ventrite margins, creating a large glabrous region.

This species can easily be separated from other co-occurring Hydrophilus by its larger size, greatly elongated antennal cupule, unique abdominal glabrous region, and distinctive terminal protarsal segment (the latter in males only).

Distribution ( Fig. 8 ). MEXICO: Baja California Sur, Campeche, Distrito Federal, Guadalajara, Guerrero, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz; USA: Arizona, California, Florida, Texas ( Hansen, 1999).

Remarks. This species is also found throughout Central America, northern South America, and the Caribbean.
