Figs 16 View FIGURES 14 – 16 a, 16b, 39

Material examined: Holotype male: N Queensland: Boulder Creek, Mossman, 1997, G. Theischinger, ANIC.

Paratype: N Queensland: Mossman Gorge, 16.vi.1971, E.F. Riek, 1 male, NMV.

Diagnosis: This species is most similar to the New Guinean Agapetus jafiwi Ross , which species Ross grouped in his A. monticolus Group despite commenting that the New Guinean species bear no resemblance to the Australian species. Both A. mossmanensis and A. jafiwi have stout gonopods in ventral view, the cerci in lateral view broadly subtriangular; and an unusual beaklike tip on abdominal segment X. Agapetus mossmanensis lacks a spur on each gonopod whereas A. jafiwi has a single small spur subapically.

Forewing length: Male 3.0- 3.5 mm.

Male genitalia: Abdominal segment VI with elongate mesal process slightly knobbed apically. Segment IX long, with deeply triangulate anterolateral margins rounded proximally. Segment X with rounded, beaklike process apically in lateral view, its distal margin covered with small spinules. Cerci in lateral view broadly subtriangular, in ventral view nearly parallel-sided, rounded apically. Gonopods in ventral view broad-based, with concavity mesally from about ¼ length, in lateral view more or less rod-shaped, narrower towards rounded apices. Phallic apparatus stout, spiny.

Female: Unknown.

Etymology: Named for the type locality.

Distribution: Known only from 2 localities in the Mossman area of far northern Queensland.

Remarks: The paratype specimen is badly faded.
