Type material. Neotype (present study).
Material examined. Neotype: adult female ( MZUSP 22.317 View Materials ), 23°53'11.5"S, 46°19'06.2"W, mangrove of Jurubatuba River , Santos, São Paulo, Brazil, 1.60 m depth, col. K. Santos, J.A.P. Santos and J.M.M. Schmiegelow, GoogleMaps
Diagnosis. Same as generic diagnosis. Type locality. São Paulo, Brazil, sandy ooze in the tidal zone (Fig. 1, number 40). Geographic distribution. SW Atlantic, Brazil, Uruguay. Remarks. Lang (1956a) redescribed this species and illustrated the subdistal lobe on the uropod basal article. We noticed a long, simple seta coming off the lobe ( Fig. 94) in the specimens we examined but Lang (1956a) did not illustrate it as having one (probably broken off).
A neotype for M. schubartii was selected (MZUSP 22.317) from near the type locality because no type material exists. This species is widely used for toxicity tests ( Montagnolli et al., 2004; Gilberto Fillmann, pers. comm.). Sieg (1982) synonymized Monokalliapseudes (= Kalliapseudes ) gianucai with Monokalliapseudes schubarti , but Guţu (2006) considered M. gianucai a valid species. Leite and Leite (1997) examined the morphological development and ovarian histology of Monokalliapseudes schubarti and noticed that male stages show distinct forms and concluded that M. gianucai is another male stage of M. schubarti , probably a secondary copulatory stage.
