Lectotype (Beckmann in Taxon 29: 276. 1980): Clayton 249 (BM-000042614).

Generitype of Hydrophyllum Linnaeus.

Current name: Hydrophyllum virginianum L. ( Hydrophyllaceae ).

Note: The type sheet, although it does not carry a Clayton number, appears from Gronovius ( Fl. Virginica: 21. 1739) to be likely to be Clayton 249 (and not 294 as listed by Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 56. 1993).
