Herbs or sub-shrubs. Leaves sessile or petiolate, variously pubescent, with or without glandular hairs or dendroid hairs. Flowers sessile, arranged in 12–26 flowered cymes, bracteoles forming a conspicuous involucre. Cymes set in elongated or branched panicles, branches erect or constituting elongated pseudo-spikes. Calyx slightly acrescent in fructification, mostly 10-nerved, campanulate or funnel-shaped, faintly bilabiate, with 5 subulate, stiff teeth. Corolla white or pale blue or blue color, bilabiate, tube cylindrical, superior lip erect, slightly bilobed, inferior lip reflex, trilobed, the central lobe cupped. Stamens exserted from tube, stigmatic branches sub-equal. Nutlets ellipsoid, smooth.

This genus is composed of 23 species, distributed from SE the United States of America, to Argentina, with two amply distributed species introduced in the Old World. In Argentina there are three native species.
