= Hyptis paranensis Epling (1937: 309) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Paraná, prope Desiro Ribas, in campo uliginoso, P. Dusén 11360 (holotype S 04-2755 ; isotypes K 488403 !, S08-15323 ).

Perennial herbs, up to 1 m high, sub-glabrous at the base, pilose towards the apex with appressed hairs. Leaves with a petiole 2–8 mm long, ovate to elliptic blade, 2.5–7 × 2–3.5 cm, acute or obtuse apex, cuneate base, hispid strigose pubescence uniformly distributed on both surfaces, with some sessile glands on abaxial surface, irregularly serrate-dentate margin. Capitula 1–2 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 2–4.5 cm long. Bracteoles 9–12 x 1–2 mm, narrow ovate, stiff, pilose on external surface. Calyx 4.5 mm up to 6 mm in fruit, exterior sub-glabrous or pilose, interior glabrous; teeth 1.5–2 mm long, sub-equal, deltoid, stiff. Corolla white with pink spots, 6–7 mm long. Nutlets ovoid, 1.3 mm long, dark brown, smooth.

Remarks:—In Herb. G, there are two duplicates (sheets) of the collection Balansa 1005, so here one of them is designated lectotype, following Arts. 8 and 9 of ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012; McNeill 2014).

Distribution and habitat: — Hyptis balansae grows in southern Brazil, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, in Corrientes province, probably also found in Misiones, but till now no records from this province.

Selected specimens examined:— ARGENTINA. Corrientes: Ituzaingó, 15 km E de ruta Nac. 12, camino a San Carlos, 11–13 February 1971, Krapovickas 18096 (SI!).
