The fossil Aralia rugosa Dorofeev (1962: 411 , 1963: 245) was described on the basis of fruit endocarp remains from the Miocene sediments of Siberia. However, it was not validly published by Dorofeev (1962, 1963) [IFPNI: http:// fossilplants.info/names/ 357E8340-D5EF-481C-92DF-E1CE88A3DA76; http://fossilplants.info/names/ 10AFA9F7- 354D-4A79-B0E1-E4919521AC49] because he failed to designate the holotype in his two publications (ICN, Art. 40.1, McNeill et al. 2012). Aralia rugosa Dorofeev was recently validated by Nikitin (2007: 120) [IFPNI:http://fossilplants. info/names/ 6646E4BD-1532-4653-AADF-FAF52E2E5BDC] through the holotype designation and providing English description. However, both Dorofeev and Nikitin overlooked that Aralia rugosa Dorofeev is a later homonym because of the extant species name Aralia rugosa Blume (1826: 872) (ICN, Art. 53.1), and a replacement name is proposed for it below:
