Largen (2001) indicated that a molecular study for the species resulted in three varieties which are the typical viridiflavus variety, the pachydermus variety and destefanii variety. The viridiflavus variety is common in southwestern Ethiopia especially in the vicinity of Jimma in the elevational range between 1,200 –2,400 m (Largen
