Remarks

This material represents the first published records of this species for the British Isles, although Bamber (1990) predicted its occurrence in southwestern UK. The typelocality for Zeuxo holdichi is littoral to 5 m depth in the Baie d’Arcachon (44 ◦ 40 ′ N, 01 ◦ 09 ′ W), since when it has been recorded littorally at St Geran, Golfe de St Malo, Brittany, 48 ◦ 39.1 ′ N, 02 ◦ 17.9 ′ W (29 June 1996), at Lilia, northwest of Plougerneau, Brittany, 48 ◦ 37.9 ′ N, 04 ◦ 33.8 ′ W (2 July 1996), in the Baie du Mont St Michel (coll. M. Davis; unpublished), in Mill Bay Dock, Plymouth (3 September 2009; id. P. Garwood, coll. P. Smith), and within Zostera beds in Galicia, Spain (42 ◦ 29.53 ′ N, 08 ◦ 52.03 ′ W) ( Esquete-Garrote et al. 2009) and in the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal (40 ◦ 40 ′ N, 08 ◦ 40 ′ W) ( Cunha et al. 1999) ( Figure 2 ).

It is a smaller and more slender species than Tanais dulongii , with which it occurred sympatrically in the Isles of Scilly, and it is without the dorsal rows of plumose setae on the first two pleonites found in Tanais species. Although only recorded to date from St Mary’s and Tresco, Zeuxo holdichi is probably present throughout the archipelago.
