acuminate or cuspidate at apex, thinly strigulose adaxially, more sparse strigulose to glabrescent or glabrous abaxially; venation eucamptodromous, secondary veins 4–6-pairs per leaflet. Inflorescence axillary, pseudoracemose; peduncle 30 cm –1.0 m long; rachis 3.0–5.0 cm long, internodes 2.0–9.0 mm long; bracts caducous; pedicels 4.0–7.0 cm long. Flowers 3.5–4.5 cm long; calyx sericeous on both surfaces, 2.0– 2.7 cm long; lobes 4, the adaxial lobe 11–13 × 4.0 mm, formed by two entirely connate sepals, apex acute, the lateral and abaxial lobes 5.0 × 3.0 mm, apex obtuse; corolla reportedly green (A.F. Skutch 3723 GH, K, US); greenish white (R.E. Woodsons Jr. & R.W. Schery 324 GH, US) or greenish yellow (R.E. Woodsons Jr. et al. 696 GH, NY, US); standard broadly elliptic, 2.5–3 cm long, basally attenuate, apically rounded, the claw ca. 2 mm long; wings oblong-obovate, 2–2.5 × 0.5–0.7 cm, basally attenuate, apically obtuse, pubescent at base, the claw ca. 1 cm; keel petals oblong, 3.5–4.5 × 1.5–2 cm, attenuate at base, obtuse at apex, pubescent at base, the claw ca. 1 cm. Stamen filaments 3.5–4.5 cm long, glabrous. Gynoecium 3.5–4.5 cm long; ovary 8.0–10 × 2.0 mm, densely sericeous; style 3.0–4.0 cm long, densely sericeous, glabrescent at apex, stigma peltate, villous. Fruits stipitate, conspicuously hispid pubescent, with long reddish brown stout stinging hairs; stipe ca. 2.5 cm long; body 15–24 × 4.0–4.5(–6.0) cm, oblong in outline, laterally compressed, attenuate at base, acuminate at apex, the surface prominently reticulate-ridged, with both transverse and longitudinal conspicuous, irregular, 5.0– 10 mm high lamellae, not constricted between the 2–5 seeds. Seeds ca. 3.7 × 3.0 cm, rounded or subquadrangular, black; hilum nearly circling entire seed circumference.

Taxonomic notes:— Mucuna monticola Moura et al. (2012a: 2–7) belongs to a group of Mucuna species endemic to the Neotropics, which all have their wing petals shorter than the standard petal (i.e., M. argyrophylla , M. chiapaneca , M. globulifera , M. jarocha , M. holtonii , M. mollis , M. monticola , and M. tapantiana ). Mucuna monticola mainly differs from the other species in this group by its prominently reticulate-ridged fruit surface, consisting of transverse and longitudinal ridges (vs. fruits lacking lamellae in the other species, except for M. tapantiana which has indistinct low diagonal lamellae all orientated in the same direction). Moreover, the abaxial surface of the leaflets has a dense indumentum in M. argyrophylla , M. holtonii , M. jarocha and M. mollis (vs. a sparse glabrescent indumentum in M. chiapaneca , M. globulifera , and M. monticola ). Stipels are persistent in M. chiapaneca , M. argyrophylla , M. holtonii , M. jarocha , and M. mollis (vs. absent in M. globulifera , M. monticola and M. tapantiana ).

Phenology:— Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.

Distribution and habitat:— Mucuna monticola occurs in montane regions (N. Zamora, personal communication) of Costa Rica and Panama ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ), between 1200 and 2000 m.

Conservation status:— Mucuna monticola is as assessed as being of Least Concern (LC). Although M. monticola has a restricted area of occupancy (32 km 2, EN), the habitat in which the species occurs is not considered to be significantly fragmented. No decline, or fluctuation, in known populations has been recorded.
