Notes:— Saxifraga australis was described by Moricand (1820) based on specimens sent by Gussone from “ monte Virgine prope Neapoli ” (Montevergine, Campania region, SW Italy). The type of Saxifraga australis is to be searched at G, which is currently closed due to maintenance (F. Steuffer, pers. com.). At NAP (barcodes NAP0001992 and NAP0001993), there are several specimens collected by Gussone on Montevergine, previously labeled as S. lingulata and later corrected by him into S. australis . They presumably belong to the same gathering cited in the protologue ( Moricand 1820); however, they cannot be regarded as original material, because they lack any date, and Gussone visited Montevergine at least twice before 1820 ( Pasquale 1871).
Tausch (1828) published the name S. thyrsoidea with a description, indication of locality (“in Apenninis”), and a diagnosis, all in Latin. The traced type does not report any further information. It consists of a flowering individual matching the protologue. The plant lacks glands, the petals are ovate and the basal leaf shape allows us to ascribe the specimen to S. callosa subsp. australis . It might be regarded as a neotype, since the date is not reported; however, after a comparison with other specimens of Tausch’s herbarium, we find more parsimonious to regard it as original material, because it reports the same geographical indication of the protologue ( Tausch 1828): “ex Apenninis”. To the best of our knowledge, the combination S. lingulata var. australis was not authored by Engler (cf. POWO 2023) but was first proposed by Tenore (l. c.).
