Protologue citation:—“Azerbajdzhan, prope p. Krachkessaman ad ripam fl. Cyri, in locis siccis, 13 April 1928, fl. A. Kolakowsky”.

Type (lectotype, designated here):— AZERBAIJAN. [Gazakh Rayon], Iris caucasica Hoffm. Transcaucasia, Azerbajdjan , prov. Gandzha, distr. Kazach, prope p. Krachkessaman, [fl.], 13 April 1928, A. Kolakovsky s.n. ( ERE 00001434!, isolectotypes BAK No. 57913!, BAK No. 57915!, BAK No. 57917!).

Notes:— Iris caucasica f. coerulescens was described by Grossheim (1950) based on plants collected by A. A. Kolakowsky near Krahkesaman Village, north-western Azerbaijan, from dry slopes along the Kura River. The author indicates a single gathering without the word “type”. Also, he noted as follows: “identified by A. I. Vvedensky as Juno pseudocaucasica (Grossh.) Vved. on the label [in Russian]”, and deposited at BAK. It has been established that the original material of I. caucasica f. coerulescens is represented by at least four specimens. All the above-mentioned specimens are accompanied by a label with the printed note “ A. Grossheim. Plantae orientales. Survey of Azerbaijan S. S. R. [Soviet Socialist Republic] pastures by order of “Narkomzem” [People’s Commissariat of Agriculture] [in Russian]”. The specimen with the label handwritten by A. Vvedensky (“ Juno pseudocaucasica (Grossh.) m. 17 October 1932 ”) is designated here as lectotype, which is deposited at ERE, not at BAK. The lectotype specimen is accompanied also by two handwritten labels: “ Iris caucasica Hoffm. f. coerulescens m. November 1947, A. Grossheim ” and “ Iris pseudocaucasica Grossh. 8 November 1999, E. Gabrielian ”. Grossheim (1950: 3) indicated that I. caucasica f. coerulescens occurs rarely and is distinguished from I. caucasica by the pale bluish-violet colour of the perianth segments and style-branch lobes.
