Type (neotype, designated here):—[Specimen from cultivated plant]. Iris persica L. var. magna Siehe, Hort. Kew , [fl.], 31 December [19]00, s.coll. s.n. ( K 01045490!).

Notes:— Iris persica var. magna was described by Mallett (1901) based on plants introduced from Asia Minor by W. Siehe in about 1900 and distributed under this name and as I. haussknechtii ( Siehe 1901: 313) . Siehe collected plant specimens in several provinces of south-central Turkey ( Baytop 2010: 201). He also gathered wild bulbs and exported them to European nurseries. The exsiccatum of I. sieheana ( E 00333002!) was made by W. Siehe using material collected in the Nur Mountains (ancient Amanus), Hatay Province, south-central Turkey, in 1912. It is more likely that I. persica var. magna was described based on the bulbs gathered in this region of Turkey. The specimen from a cultivated plant, preserved in the Kew collection, is designated here as neotype of I. persica var. magna . This specimen is represented by the plant, which was grown from a bulb most probably collected and exported by Siehe to Kew.
