Mago acutidens Simon, 1900: 56 View in CoL (Male lectotype and paralectotypes designated by Galiano from Cametá [2.25°S 49.60°W], Pará (or Tefé, Amazonas; both localities in original lable), Brazil, E. Simon, deposited in the MNHN 7577, examined); Caporiacco, 1948: 697, fig. 119; Galiano, 1963: 387, pl. XXVI, figs 6–9; Platnick, 2014.
Diagnosis. Within the group, this species seems to be closely related to M. jurutiensis sp. nov. by having median projections on both the prolateral and retrolateral sides of the embolus, but can be identified by the less developed apophyses ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 23 – 29 ). Females of both these species have large, oblique copulation openings about twice the width of the copulation ducts ( Figs 25–26, 28–29 View FIGURES 23 – 29 ), but it is difficult to tell them apart. So far, the two species have not been found living at the same locality.
Description. Male. See Galiano (1963: 387, pl. XXVI, fig. 6–9).
Female. See Caporiacco (1948: 697, fig. 119).
Note. The median prolateral projection on the embolus of the lectotype of M. acutidens ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 23 – 29 ) seems to have been ignored in the redescription (see Galiano, 1963, pl. XXVI, fig. 9). Caporiacco (1948: 697) mentions he had only three females from Guyana. At the time, the male-female match was established only by comparison of these females with Simon’s original description of the male. We were not able to examine the specimens used by Caporiacco in his description, but the illustration of the epigyne given ( Caporiacco, 1948, fig. 119) does not match exactly with the external reproductive structure of the female of this species ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 23 – 29 ). However, Caporiacco is known for having given poor descriptions and especially bad drawings that had little similarity to the structures he was illustrating (see Ruiz & Brescovit, 2005; Ruiz et al., 2007; Ruiz & Brescovit, 2008). Beacause of the homogeneity in body shape and coloration within the acutidens group of Mago , we will not present descriptive information for the female other than the illustrations of the epigyne.
