Type Locality: " Guadalupe Mts" [Culberson Co., Texas, USA]. Restricted by A. H. Howell (1929:101) to head of Dog Canyon, 7,000 ft [2,130 m].

Discussion: Subgenus Neotamias . Elevated from subspecies of cinereicollis by Fleharty (1960). Reviewed by Findley et al. (1975:103-112), and by Best et al. (1992, Mammalian Species No. 411).
