Type. Fall (1915) described P. fuscipes based upon two specimens from New Mexico. Fall’s type male, hereby designated lectotype, labeled “Cloudcroft / N.M. [hand-inked, white paper] // ♂ // TYPE [printed] / fuscipes [hand-inked, white paper] // M.C.Z. / Type [printed] / 24938 [hand-inked, red paper] // H.C. FALL / COLLECTION // LECTOTYPE / Pachybrachys / fuscipes Fall / R. J. Barney 2023 [printed, red paper]”, was examined, dissected, and photographed ( Fig. 8 ). Fall also described a variety, purgatus, based upon a series from Williams, Arizona. One of the males was dissected and photographed ( Fig. 9 ) .

Redescription. Male. Robust, yellow-red with brown punctation ( Fig. 8 ); L = 3.20–4.28 mm (mean = 3.94 mm, n = 9); W = 1.98–2.25 mm (mean = 2.05 mm, n = 9); L/W = 1.89–1.95 (mean = 1.92, n = 9). Head: Slightly wider than thoracic apex, HW = 1.13–1.50 mm (mean = 1.39 mm, n = 9); eyes widely separated, IOD = 0.38–0.61 mm (mean = 0.51 mm, n = 9); IOD/HW = 0.31–0.41 (mean = 0.36, n = 9); face yellow with red punctures, with red median line descending from vertex to middle of eyes; antenna progressing from yellow-red to brown, not reaching elytral declivity. Pronotum: Yellow, heavily red-punctate, less so at margins, with obscure M-shaped red maculae; PL = 0.95–1.29 mm (mean = 1.18 mm, n = 9); PW = 1.53–2.08 mm (mean = 1.92 mm, n = 9); PL/PW = 0.58–0.63 (mean = 0.61, n = 9). Elytra: Yellow, heavily punctate with red-brown punctures and maculae, striae irregular. Pygidium: Yellow-red with brown median line. Venter: Brown. Legs: Yellow-red, front claws of male slightly enlarged. Genitalia: Median lobe in en-face view narrow with parallel sides, sharply narrowed to extended T; medial lobe in lateral view with inflated base to wide, tubular lobe. Rounded keel-like bubble evident. Six males from Arizona and New Mexico were dissected.

Female. As in male, except L = 4.62–5.07 mm (mean = 4.86 mm, n = 8); W = 2.31–2.65 mm (mean = 2.51 mm, n = 8); L/W = 1.87–2.01 (mean = 1.94, n = 8); HW = 1.52–1.78 mm (mean = 1.69 mm, n = 8); IOD = 0.56–0.72 mm (mean = 0.64 mm, n = 8); IOD/HW = 0.32–0.41 (mean = 0.38, n = 8).

Remarks. Pachybrachis fuscipes is a large, heavily punctured, reddish species, often confused with Pachybrachis sanrita Bowditch. The median lobes are also similar, but that of P. fuscipes is more narrowed and tapers quickly to an extended T.

Distribution. Pachybrachis fuscipes is known from Arizona and New Mexico.

Biological Notes. Clark et al. (2004) reported specimens collected from Pinus ponderosa . Some specimens were collected via UV light in Arizona.
