Diagnosis. Body of moderate size to large (TL 3.9–5.0 mm), uniformly brown. Setation of head and pronotum adherent, covered with somewhat flattened setae, with no suberect setae, what makes this species easy to distinguish from other Atopida .

Redescription. Male. Body elongated, moderate size to large (TL 3.9–5.0 mm), moderately convex. Body uniformly brown, antennae tone lighter at base. Punctation on head and pronotum granulate, strong and dense, punctures touching each other, punctation on elytra simple, punctures separated by 0.5–1.0× diameter of a puncture, interspaces microreticulate, dull. Body covered with moderately long, adherent, yellowish setae, arranged into kind of pattern along the middle of pronotum and sometimes head. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, elevated. Pronotum widest in anterior 1/3, sides curved, anterolateral angles not or only subtly produced, posterolateral angles obtuse. Elytra without carinae, humeri well-marked. Ventrite 5 rounded. Penis long (L 0.63 mm, W 0.24 mm), trigonium narrow, as long as or slightly shorter than parameroids, slightly bent upwards, apex truncate; parameroids elongated, apices broadening and obliquely truncate, slightly serrated, apical part covered with few punctures; pala triangular, much longer than parameroids. Tegmen (L 0.52 mm, W 0.34 mm) with moderately wide subrectangular parameres, apices triangularly narrowing, with scarce punctures and delicate setae in apical part.

Female. Body moderately big to large (TL 4.3–5.0 mm), macropterous. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, elevated. Pronotum strongly transverse, much stronger than in males, punctures along basal margin larger and sparser than on remaining portions of elytra. Setation on elytra very short, setae nor reaching the next puncture, elytral interspaces shining, punctures separated by ca. 0.5× diameter of a puncture. Ventrite 5 rounded, apex rounded, tergite VII with rectangular sclerotization in apical portion. Lateral portions of ventrites 3 and 4 with small, oval setal patches. Bursal sclerite consisting of pair of small (L 0.15 mm) rod-like sclerites hooked in posterior portion.

Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 10) TL 3.90–4.95 mm (4.50 mm), PL 0.70–0.85 mm (0.77 mm), PW 1.00– 1.40 mm (1.22 mm), EL 3.15–4.10 mm (3.73 mm), EW 1.70–2.20 mm (2.04 mm), TL/EW 2.08–2.35 (2.21), PW/PL 1.33–2.00 (1.58), EL/EW 1.76–1.95 (1.83), EL/PL 4.50–5.79 (4.84), EW/PW 1.48–2.15 (1.67). Females (n = 10) TL 4.25–5.00 mm (4.63 mm), PL 0.75–0.90 mm (0.80 mm), PW 1.30–1.55 mm (1.45 mm), EL 3.45–4.15 mm (3.79 mm), EW 1.85–2.15 mm (2.01 mm), TL/EW 2.21–2.38 (2.30), PW/PL 1.67–2.07 (1.82), EL/EW 1.76–1.97 (1.89), EL/PL 4.11–5.47 (4.77), EW/PW 1.34–1.46 (1.39).

Distribution. Common in North Island, known from scattered localities in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Taranaki, Rangitikei and Wellington areas ( Fig. 18H View FIGURE 18 ).

Remarks. Broun (1912) correctly noted the similarities of A. sinuata and A. basalis , although he did not notice that these are males and females of the same species.
