5. PSEUDOLYCOPODIELLA Holub, Folia Geobot. Phytotax. View in CoL 18: 441. 1983. — Lycopodium sect. Caroliniana Bruce, Amer. Fern J. 66: 136. 1976. Type:— Pseudolycopodiella caroliniana (L.) Holub (= Lycopodium carolinianum L., Sp. Pl. 1104. 1753).

Plants with prostrate, rooting, indeterminate, isophyllous or anisophyllous horizontally branching shoots, and dorsally arising, erect, simple strobiliferous branches. Sporophylls subpeltate, with a median basiscopic wing, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, of different colour and texture than peduncle leaves, the margins minutely rugose to minutely fimbriate-denticulate. Sporangia isovalvate, attached to the sporophyll base, the epidermal cells with thin, straight, non-lignified side walls, but with lignified, incompletely semiannular thickenings. Spores rugate. Gametophytes green, tuberous and lobed on the upper side, surface-living, with mycorrhiza in the base.

Temperate and tropical regions, but absent from Europe, western temperate Asia, and western temperate North America. Ca. 10 species in the Americas, 5 in the Guianas, 1 endemic to Suriname.
