Artemisia capitata (Nutt.) Sòn. Garcia et al. (2011: 162) ≡ Sphaeromeria capitata Nuttall (1841: 402) ≡ Tanacetum capitatum (Nutt.) Torrey & A. Gray (1843: 415).

Protologue:—“On a high hill, near the Red Butes [Buttes] of the Platte, towards its northern sources on the Sweet Water.” ( Nuttall 1841: 402).

Type:— UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. [Wyoming, probably Natrona County:] “Red Butes of the Platte on a high hill”, [Nuttall] ( BM [ BM 001119306], lectotype designated by Cronquist (1994: 144, as “ holotype ”; see below), image available from JSTOR Global Plants (2017 –onward)).

Cronquist (1994) cited the only Nuttall’s specimen known so far from BM as the “ holotype ” ; this designation is correctable to the lectotype (Art. 9.9 of ICN: McNeill et al. 2012). The lectotype (with Nuttall’s label containing the description and geographical information, see above) is represented by three plants with inflorescences and one small plant with a broken inflorescence (the broken fragment kept in an envelope). It is mounted on the same sheet with BM001119306 (collected by C. C. Parry in 1873) .

Other original specimens of this taxon (isolectotypes) are available from several other herbaria: K ( K 000891696: “Mts. of R. Platte. Nuttall”), GH ( GH 00263228: “Red Butes. Sources of Platte. Nuttall”), and KW ( KW 001002852: “ Tanacetum capitatum Torr. et Gray. Sphaeromeria capitata . Nuttall. R. Mts.”, eight well-preserved plants; KW 001002853: “ Sphaeromeria capitata . Mts of Riv. Platte. Nuttall”, three plants). Specimens KW 001002852 and KW 001002853 ( Figure 2 ) are mounted on the same sheet, exactly as they were originally arranged in the Turczaninow’s folder. However, the specimen KW 001002853 (at the bottom of the sheet, consisting of three plants) is either a mixed collection or one plant was misplaced in the Turczaninow herbarium when the plants were still unmounted. The plant in the center evidently belongs to Artemisia nuttallii ( Sphaeromeria argentea ), while the right and left plants are indeed A. capitata ( S. capitata ).
