Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. Mugil albula Linnaeus 1766 , is currently considered a synonym of M. cephalus . Twenty herborized specimens are listed in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794), and two specimens identified as M. albula were transferred to the University of Coimbra, which can be the specimens analyzed here. No specimen of Mugil appears in the transference list to Lisboa. There is a description of M. albula in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript. Mugil liza occurs in the Western Atlantic on Bermuda and from Cuba to Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil) (Menezes & Figueiredo 1985; Harrison 2002).
