Archosargus rhomboidalis ( Linnaeus 1758) View in CoL
Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000051 ( Fig. 62 View FIGURE 62 ).
Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Sparus maculatus ” (see Comments).
Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None/ “Canhanha” (see Comments).
Comments: This species has been subsequently reidentified as Sparus argentatus , with the new specific name written over the old one, which is crossed out. Although the specific name “ maculatus ” is a common specific name, we were unable to identify any species name available during Veloso’s time that corresponds to this specific name, and that fits this species. Consequently, it is likely that Veloso intended to assign a new name to this species. The reidentification Sparus argentatus is most likely a misspelling of Sparus argenteus Bloch & Schneider 1801 (= Pagrus pagrus ) which is a similar sparid and that also occurs in the western Atlantic. Veloso described Sparus maculatus in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript. There are 67 herborized specimens of Sparus listed in the Ajuda’s inventory, and no Sparus maculatus is mentioned in the transference document to the University of Coimbra. However, two specimens of S. maculatus are mentioned in the transference to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. The Tupi common name is inscribed in the lower left corner, typically reserved for the Portuguese common name. Presently, Canhanha continues to be employed as the common name for this species. Archosargus rhomboidalis occurs in the Western Atlantic from New Jersey ( USA) to São Paulo ( Brazil) ( Menezes & Figueiredo 1980; Carpenter 2002d).
