Afrosystolederus nov. gen.
Type species: Afrosystolederus garmsi nov. spec.
Currently, the genus is monotypic and only known from West-Africa.
We attribute it provisionally to the subfamily Metrodorinae View in CoL , but this subfamily is polyphyletic and is in need of revision.
DIAGNOSIS.
Fastigium very narrow (1/3-1/4 of the width of the eyes). Eyes extending above the pronotum. Lateral lobes of the paranota not contiguous to the body. Hind wings about as long as the pronotum.
The new genus is separated from (the types of) Systolederus , Pseudosystolederus and Teredorus by the alae that do not extend beyond the pronotum. From Pseudosystolederus it is also separated by the absence of projections on the middle femora. It is separated from Teredorus by the lateral lobes of the paranota that are not contiguous to the body.
DESCRIPTION.
See the description of the type species.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE CREATION OF A NEW GENUS
We describe a new genus for the new Afrotropical species, in order not to augment the confusion in the taxonomy and systematics of species with a narrow fastigium. Most of these are present in the Indo-Malayan region and have been described in Systolederus and Teredorus . Teredorus , however, was created for a Neotropical species. It is highly unlikely that the genus would be present in the Neotropical, Afrotropical and Indo-Malayan regions, as Deng et al. (2014) have argued. Moreover, in the Afrotropics it is only known from West-Africa, and in the Neotropical region from Peru. In Africa, there is no other genus known that seems closely related.
