Genus Leptochiton Gray, 1847
Type species. Chiton cinereus Montagu, 1803 (non Linnaeus, 1767) = Leptochiton asellus ( Gmelin, 1791) SD by Gray (1847).
Genus distribution. Worldwide, Carboniferous–Recent, intertidal– 7657 m.
Remarks. Sigwart et al. (2011) demonstrated that Leptochiton is not monophyletic based on molecular analyses of three genes; accordingly Leptochiton s.s. is restricted to the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. I here use Leptochiton s.l. according to the traditional morphological concept.
