Coccus serratulae Fabricius, 1775: 744 . Monophlebus serratulae (Fabricius) View in CoL ; Cockerell 1902: 232. Gueriniella serratulae (Fabricius) View in CoL ; Fernald 1903: 331.

Field characteristics (adapted from Morrison 1928): In life, found on stems of host, protected by wax coating; producing a conspicuous mass of white cottony secretion at time of oviposition, this surrounding adult female and eggs.

Microscopic diagnosis (derived from Unruh & Gullan 2008a): Slide-mounted adult female elongate oval, covered in hair-like and flagellate setae, longest setae present in marginal clusters and between antennae, setae clustered ventromedially on thoracic segments, and forming medial to submedial transverse segmental rows across abdomen. Cicatrices situated posterior to vulva, each circular to oval, central cicatrix largest. Internal anal tube with inner sclerotized ring of pores, each with 1 or 2 circular central loculi and 6 or 7 circular outer loculi; external anal opening with 2 or 3 rings of multilocular disc-pores, each with trilocular center and 5–8 outer loculi. Ovisac band absent. Marsupium and marsupial band absent. Simple multilocular disc-pores on dorsum, each with a bilocular or trilocular centre and 6–10 outer loculi, forming transverse rows and marginal and medial clusters on each segment. Simple multilocular disc-pores on venter of 2 types: (i) pores each with bilocular center and 4–8 outer loculi, scattered on medial head and thorax and forming transverse rows on medial to submedial abdomen; and (ii) pores with same structure as those on dorsum, scattered amongst setae on head, thorax and marginally on all segments. Area around vulva with larger, oval multilocular disc-pores, each with two central loculi and outer ring of about 12 peripheral loculi.

Distribution: Gueriniella serratulae is known from 12 countries in the Mediterranean region, and Republic of Georgia and Iran ( García Morales et al. 2016), where it has been recorded from Kermanshah, Kerman and Lorestan provinces ( Moghaddam & Tavakoli 2010).

Host-plants: The species is fairly polyphagous, having been recorded from host-plants in 32 genera belonging to 13 families ( García Morales et al. 2016); in Iran, the host-plant was not identified.

Economic importance: None recorded.

Natural enemies: None recorded in Iran.
