Lectotype (designated by González 1990: 72):— PERU. San Martín: Juan Jui, alto rio Huallaga , 400–800 m, May 1936 (fl.), G. Taxonomic notes:— González (1990) regarded this name as synonym of Aristolochia tonduzii Schmidt (1927: 23) . However, in the ongoing monograph of Aristolochia for Flora Neotropica, the same author has considered that the diagnostic characters proposed by Hoehne (1942b) are unequivocally distinct to those found in A. tonduzii , although both species correspond to the same series ( Aristolochia ser. Thyrsicae ). Furthermore, they occupy disjunct areas: A. schmidtiana grows in Amazonian forests of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru; whereas A. tonduzii is found in forests of SE Central America and near by Chocoan forests of Colombia.

1942b).
