Gnathosoma about 85 long and 95 wide. Palp 40 long (40–45) and 30 wide (30–35), without lateral notches. Palpalae only slightly thickened ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 A): dF 15–17, about 2 times longer than other palpalae, dG and l”G subequal in length, 7–8 long and 6–7 long, respectively; dG and dF subequal in width and slightly wide than l”G. Palpalae dG with 4–5 pectinations. Setae vF about 60 long, smooth. Subcapitulum ventrally without membranous projections. Peritrematal branch about 40 long. Idiosoma 225–235 long. Smooth cuticle between peritrematal branches and transverse striations apunctate. All dorsal setae slightly serrate. Dorsal shield unornamented, 150 long (135–150) and 210 wide (200–210), roughly octagonal; anterior and posterior margins widely concave. Idiosoma ventrally without scales or verrucosities, striated anterior to level of seta 1a bases and at level of setal bases 3a. Setae 1a situated slightly posterior to level of setal bases 1c. Setae 3a situated at level of coxal fields III. Distance between setal bases 3a 3–4 times longer than between setal bases 1a. Ventral setae setae h1 present. Distances h1–h1 and h2–h2 subequal. Coxal fields I and II smooth. Vulvar pocket-like structure without long lateral longitudinal folds. Vulvar apodemes weakly developed but discernible. Lengths of setae: vi 88 (85–93), ve and si 65–75, se 85 (80–90), c2 70 (70–85), h1 about 8, and h2 about 20. Solenidia ω 1 I and ω 1 II 9–10 long, narrow straight and conical, with rounded apex. Empodium of tarsi I and II not elongated, only slightly longer or subequal to respective tarsus. Genua I and II with 3 setae (d, l’, v’), femora I and II with 2 setae (d and v), trochanters I and II with 1 seta (v). Apical segment of leg III with 5 setae; preapical segment with 2 setae. Leg IV with 2 segments; preapical segment with 1 seta; apical segment with 4 setae.
MALE (3 paratypes, Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 , 11 View FIGURE 11 D–G). Body, including gnathosoma, 135–160 long and 185–200 wide. Gnathosomal length and width subequal, about 65. Palp about 30 long and 25 wide, without notches. Palpalae strongly different in shape ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 D): dF about 15 long, almost twice as long as dG (about 8 long) and about 4 times longer than l”G (about 4 long); dG 2–3 times wider than dF and l”G. Setae vF about 40 long, smooth. Subcapitulum ventrally as in female. Idiosoma about 160 long. Smooth cuticle between peritrematal branches and transverse striations apunctate. Dorsal shield about 135 long and 165 wide; with anterior margin widely concave, narrowed in posterior part (about 40 wide), with straight posterior margin. Aedeagus about 85 long, almost straight, situated anterior to genital opening. Genital opening situated in posterior quarter of dorsal shield. Genital arch about 25 long. Genital setae 10–12 long; setae g2 situated equidistant to g1 and g3. Distance g1–g1 about 35, g2– g2 about 25, and g3–g3 15. Setae vi, ve, si, se, and c2 slightly serrate, 50–65 long. Idiosoma ventrally without scales or verrucosities, striated only anterior to setal bases 1a. Coxal fields I and II smooth. Leg I and II setation as in female. Solenidia ω 1 I and ω 1 II 9–10 long, narrow straight and conical, with rounded apex. Apical segment of leg III with 5 setae; preapical segment with 2 setae. Leg IV with 1 segment bearing 5 setae.
Type material. Holotype female ( OSAL 0079988), 10 female and 3 male paratypes ( OSAL 0 0 77500, 0 0 77501, 0079976–00779980, 0 0 79983, 0 0 79986, 0 0 79987, 0079989–0079991, 0083599) from Calidris minutilla (Vieillot) ( Charadriiformes : Scolopacidae ), USA: Kansas, Douglas Co., Lawrence, 38.97°N, 95.24°W ( GNIS- USGS), 11 May 1962, coll. A.B. Amerson.
Type deposition. Holotype and most of paratypes in OSAL, 1 female paratype each in UMMZ and ZISP.
Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from the generic name of the host and is a noun in apposition.
Hosts and distribution. Calidris minutilla ( Charadriiformes : Scolopacidae ) from USA (Kansas) (present paper).
Differential diagnosis. Among species of the group capellae the new species is closest to Harpyrhynchoides capellae ( Fritsch, 1954) ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 H, I) and H. charadrius sp. nov. In females of these species, palpalae dF and dG are subequal in width and setae vi are present. These species differ from each other by the following character states. In females of H. calidris sp. nov., palpalae dF are almost twice as long as dG (vs. subequal in H. capellae ); setae h2 are about 20 long, approximately 2.5 times longer than h1 (vs. h2 70 long, about 4 times longer than h1); in males, distance g2–g2 is approximately 1.6 times longer than g3–g3 (vs. g3–g3 about 3 times longer than g2– g2). It differs from females of H. charadrius by the shorter palpalae, dF 15–17 long, dG and l”G 6–8 long (vs. dF 30–32 long, dG 20–22, and l”G 12–14 long in H. charadrius ), subequal lengths of dG and l”G (vs. dG 1.7 times longer than l”G) and by the partially striated ventral surface of the idiosoma (vs. idiosoma almost completely striated).
