Distribution:— El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico.
Notes:— The taxonomy of this species is complicated, and as discussed by Breckon (1979), it has been full of misunderstandings. We consider that it belongs to sect. Calyptrosolon and is restricted to Mexico and Central America. Plants from South America have been recognized as Cnidoscolus tubulosus var. trilobus (e.g., Fernández Casas 2007e, Novara 2013). However, both morphology and molecular data (Maya-Lastra & Steinmann in prep.) support its placement in sect. Jussieuia , and it is here treated as a synonym of Cnidoscolus urens . More studies of C. tubulosus would be beneficial, in particular its relationship with the morphologically similar C. autlanensis .
