Hemilamprops ultimaespei Zimmer, 1921 View in CoL
Hemilamprops ultimaespei Zimmer, 1921: 3 View in CoL –5, fig. 1–3.
Hemilamprops lotusae Băcescu, 1969: 168 View in CoL –171, fig. 4.— Mühlenhardt-Siegel, 2003: 125 –126. [New synonymy]
Type material. LEcTOTYPE: OVIgEROUS fEMALE, SMNH TYPE-817 (PART), TERRE dU FEU, ULTIMA ESPERANZA, SOUTHERN CHILE, 50°30’S, 74°W. PARALEcTOTYPE: SUbAdULT fEMALE, SMNH TYPE-817 ( PART) , cOLLEcTEd WITH HOLOTYPE.
Remarks. ZIMMER (1921) dId NOT dESIgNATE A HOLOTYPE fOR H. ultimaespei , SO HIS TWO TYPE SPEcIMENS ARE SYNTYPES. THE TYPE dEScRIPTION ANd fIgURES ARE bASEd ENTIRELY ON THE OVIgEROUS fEMALE SPEcIMEN, WHIcH IS HEREbY dEcLAREd THE LEcTOTYPE. THE SUbAdULT fEMALE SPEcIMEN WAS MENTIONEd bRIEfLY IN THE TEXT Of THE ORIgINAL dEScRIPTION AS YOUNgER ANd IN POOR SHAPE, ANd bEcOMES THE PARALEcTOTYPE. MüHLENHARdT-SIEgEL (2003) SUggESTEd THAT A LATERAL RIdgE ON THE cARAPAcE WAS PRObAbLY PRESENT IN H. ultimaespei , bUT OVERLOOKEd bY ZIMMER (1921). UPON cLOSE INSPEcTION, INcLUdINg TEMPORARY STAININg WITH cHLORAZOLE bLAcK E IN ETHANOL, NEITHER Of THE TYPE SPEcIMENS Of H. ultimaespei HAS ANY TRAcE Of A LATERAL RIdgE ON THE cARAPAcE.
THE IdENTITY Of H. lotusae BăcEScU, 1969 , ANOTHER SOUTHWESTERN ATLANTIc SPEcIES, HAS bEEN AMbIgUOUS SINcE IT WAS fIRST dEScRIbEd. THE ORIgINAL TYPE MATERIAL Of H. lotusae (OVIgEROUS fEMALE HOLOTYPE, GAM 112; 3 OVIgEROUS fEMALE PARATYPES, GAM 113; GOLfE dE SAINT ANdREWS, ARgENTINA, 41°16’S, 60°03’W) IS NOW LOST, AccORdINg TO I. PETREScU, cURATOR Of cUMAcEANS AT THE GAM (cITEd IN MüHLENHARdT-SIEgEL 2003, ANd PERS. cOMM). THE ORIgINAL dEScRIPTION Of H. lotusae WAS ENTIRELY INAdEqUATE TO dIScRIMINATE THIS SPEcIES fROM OTHER SPEcIES Of Hemilamprops . THE SOLE cHARAcTER dISTINgUISHINg H. lotusae fROM H. ultimaespei IN THE ORIgINAL dEScRIPTION WAS THE POSSESSION Of ONE PAIR Of LATERAL SETAE ON THE TELSON RATHER THAN THREE PAIRS; HOWEVER, THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO SPEcIES Of Hemilamprops KNOWN IN WHIcH THE NUMbER Of LATERAL SETAE ON THE TELSON VARIES fROM 2–3 WITHIN POPULATIONS (GERKEN 2005; MüHLENHARdT-SIEgEL 2003), ANd EVEN ON THE SAME INdIVIdUAL (GERKEN 2005), THUS THIS cHARAcTERISTIc cANNOT bE cONSIdEREd dIAgNOSTIc. MüHLENHARdT-SIEgEL (2003) ALREAdY SUggESTEd THAT H. lotusae MAY bE A SYNONYM Of H. ultimaespei . GIVEN THE RELATIVELY cLOSE LOcALITIES Of cOLLEcTION bETWEEN H. lotusae ANd H. ultimaespei ANd THE MORPHOLOgIcAL SIMILARITIES NOTEd bY BăcEScU (1969) ANd MüHLENHARdT-SIEgEL (2003), THE IdENTITY Of H. lotusae REqUIRES RESOLUTION. THUS, TO fIX THE IdENTITY Of H. lotusae , THE LEcTOTYPE Of H. ultimaespei IS HEREbY dESIgNATEd AS THE SIMULTANEOUS NEOTYPE Of H. lotusae , MAKINg H. lotusae A jUNIOR ObjEcTIVE SYNONYM Of H. ultimaespei .
