Diagnosis. Similar to other members of the B. (‘ Cillenus ̓) complex in having a large head with long mandibles, but distinguished by the character states of the pronotum, particularly the produced anterior angles and the sinuate posterior margin near the hind angles ( Figs. 1–5 View FIGURES 1–9 ; see also Lindroth 1980: Figs. 17 View FIGURES 12–24 –32).
Description. Body ( Figs. 2–5 View FIGURES 1–9 ) small (about 3.5–4.5 mm; see Nakane 1963; Lindroth 1980; Morita 1993). Head large; mandibles long, the part protruding beyond the labrum more than three times longer than the labium; frontal impressions deep and long, with the posterior ends reaching those of eyes; tempora short and not swollen, with more than 5 setae on the lateral and ventrolateral sides.
Pronotum subcordate, widest at apical 1/3; anterior margin emarginate, wider than posterior margin; anterior angles produced; lateral margins arcuate on apical 2/3, sinuate on basal 1/3; two pairs of marginal setae, anterior pair in front of the widest pronotal point and posterior pair on tip of hind angles; posterior margin slightly arcuate at median area, sinuate near hind angles; hind angles with tip narrowly rounded; surface almost smooth; anterior transverse line superficial; posterior transverse line deep, connecting both sides of the laterobasal impressions; laterobasal impressions small and deep; median line impressed between anterior and posterior transverse lines, absent near the anterior and posterior margins.
Elytra oblong; shoulders not denticulate; intervals almost flat; scutellar stria present, not connected to stria 1; 1 setigerous puncture at anterior end of stria 1; 2 setigerous punctures on interval 3, both adjoining stria 3; apices rounded and not denticulate. Ventral side almost smooth; male sternum 7 with two pairs of setae.
Aedeagus spatulate, weakly arcuate ventrally; left paramere larger than right paramere; endophallus ( Figs. 14–20 View FIGURES 12–24 ) straight, directed dorsally, without sclerites except for gonopore; gonopore with two sclerotized parts; 3 lobes present in all species, 1 on ventromedian surface (i.e., ventromedian lobe), 1 on dorsomedian surface (i.e., dorsomedian lobe), and 1 near gonopore (i.e., gonoporal lobe).
Vagina without pigmentation; basal and apical parts of spermatheca sclerotized; sclerotized part of spermathecal apex ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 12–24 ) long, length almost twice its width.
Included species. Bembidion yokohamae (Bates) ( Figs. 2 View FIGURES 1–9 , 15 View FIGURES 12–24 ), B. seticorne Lindroth ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12–24 ), B. sumaoi Morita ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12–24 ), B. aestuarii (Uéno & Habu) ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 12–24 ), B. tokunoshimanum (Nakane) ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 12–24 ), B. tsutsuii (Uéno) ( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1–9 , 11 View FIGURES 10–11 , 20 View FIGURES 12–24 ), and B. yakushimanum sp. nov. ( Figs. 4, 6, 8 View FIGURES 1–9 , 10 View FIGURES 10–11 , 19 View FIGURES 12–24 ).
