Rosa agrestis Savi (1798: 475) View in CoL

Rosa rubiginosa Linnaeus (1771: 564) subsp. agrestis (Savi) Hooker (1884: 132) View in CoL Type (neotype, here designated):— ITALY. Tuscany: Monte Pisano a Caprona (Calci, Pisa), lungo il sentiero che porta alla Torre degli

Upezzinghi, gariga, 60 m s.l.m. (WGS84: 43.70698, 10.51025), 26 May 2016, F. Roma-Marzio et M. D’Antraccoli, s.n. ( PI!; GoogleMaps

isoneotype, FI!).

Note:—In the protologue, Savi stated that this species grows in the woods of the surroundings of Pisa and particularly in Monte Pisano: “ Trovasi nelle siepi, nella selva, e nel Monte Pisano ”. In all the investigated herbaria, we did not found any original material. Hence, according to Art. 9.7 and Art. 9.13 of the ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012) we designated a neotype, selecting a plant collected in Monte Pisano, which represents the locus classicus for this species. The selected neotype, composed by five sprigs, bearing flowers and rose hips ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), completely agrees with the protologue and with the current application of the name (e.g. Pignatti 1982, Silvestre & Montserrat 1998, Lattanzi & Tilia 2002, Tison & de Foucault 2014). According to the latter authors, the following main morphological characters allow to distinguish Rosa agrestis from related taxa, such as R. serafinii Viviani (1824: 67) and R. micrantha Borrer ex Smith (1813: 2490) : pedicels> 10 mm long, glabrous sepals and styles, leaflets generally 7, markedly glandular and cuneate at base, rose hips glabrous, ovoid to ellipsoid.
