Carpinus cordata var. mollis (Rehder) W.C.Cheng ex Y.Chen (1937: 163) View in CoL .

Note:— Carpinus mollis was published by Rehder (1930) based on the collection W.P. Fang 4245 from Sichuan. Chen (1937) listed the name C. cordata var. mollis (Rehd.) Cheng in his book but did not cite its basionym. In the appendix, Chen (1937) clearly stated that “Rehd.” represents for Alfred Rehder and “Cheng” for W.C.Cheng [Ṇ万n'].According to Art. 41.3 of International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (Shenzhen Code, Turland et al. 2018), it implied that Chen (1937) validated the name by indirectly referencing to its basionym Carpinus mollis Rehder (1930: 154) . Under Art 46.7, the name C. cordata var. mollis is to be attributed to “(Rehder) W.C.Cheng ex Y.Chen”, but not “(Rehder) W.C. Cheng” only, since Yung Chen [Ŕẃ], whose abbreviation is “Y. Chen” recommended by IPNI, is the author of the publication. It is surprised that it was erroneously cited as either “(Rehder) W.C.Cheng ex Chun” ( Li & Skvortsov 1999), or “(Rehder) W.C.Cheng ex F.H.Chen” (IPNI 2021).
