Remarks. Bresedium brevipes was initially described as Sesarma edwardsii var. brevipes by De Man (1889) based on 3 specimens reportedly from Sydney, Australia. Serene & Soh (1970) subsequently established the genus Bresedium with this species as the type species and also including Sesarma sedilensis Tweedie, 1950 . While Sydney has been reported as the type locality of Bresedium brevipes, Davie (2002) suggests that this may be erroneous, as all subsequent records for this species in Australia have been in Queensland, well north of Sydney. This species has also been recorded from eastern India, Sri Lanka, Indo-Malaysia, Philippines, southern China, Taiwan, and southern Japan ( Dai et al. 1986; Davie 2002; Li 2014; Maenosono & Naruse 2016).
For the Philippines, this species was previously reported by Bürger (1893: 617) as “ Sesarma edwardsi var. breviceps ” from “Bäche der Ebene Marineles”. Estampador (1937, 1959) cited Bürger’s record in his checklists, using the name “ Sesarma edwardsi ”. Tesch (1917) considered Bürger’s record to be for S. edwardsi brevipes instead, with the “ breviceps ” probably just a mis-transcription of De Man’s name (also Maenosono & Naruse 2016). We also take “Marineles” to mean Mariveles in the Bataan Peninsula, Luzon Island.
Recently, Li et al. (2020) revised B. brevipes , and included the poorly known Sesarma (Sesarma) edwardsi philippinense Rathbun, 1914 , previously described from Busuanga I. (Calamian Is., Philippines) and recognized by subsequent authors as a separate species of Bresedium ( Serène & Soh 1970; Ng et al. 2008), in the synonymy for this species. Their detailed morphological study also included several specimens from the central Philippine islands of Cebu and Bohol.
The present material from Mindanao agrees well with the description and illustrations of Maenosono & Naruse (2016) and Li et al. (2020) for B. brevipes . This species is commonly found under rocky substrate along the banks of the Tagoloan and Maigo rivers about 1 km upstream of the river mouth. The Tagoloan River collection site is quite close to a newly established coal power plant where there is significant effluent discharge (NJ Lagare, pers. obs.), which suggests that this species may have some tolerance for pollution.
New Mindanao record.
