Charterginus carinatus View in CoL ; Ducke, 1910, Ann. Hist.-Nat. Mus. Natl. Hung. 8: 467 (female; key; Panama)— Bequaert, 1938, Rev. Entomol., Rio de Janeiro 9: 102— Richards, 1978, Soc. Wasps Am.: 128 (key), 129—Schremmer, 1978, Entomol. General. 5 (1): 17-23, figs. 1-5 (nest; Colombia: Sucre)—Sarmiento, 1994, Rev. Biol. Trop. 42 (1/2): 358 (list)— Andena et al., 2009, Journal of Natural History. 43: 1183–1193 (phylogeny, key).
Diagnosis. Length 8.0–9.0 mm., length fore wing 8.0– 8.5 mm.
Yellowish species, with black marks on the vertex and scutum, and small brownish marks on the pronotum, scutellum, mesepimeron, mesepisternum, propodeum and base of terga and sterna I and II; wings yellowish hyaline. Macropunctures on frons, vertex and mesosoma dense, coarse; metasomal tergum I with shallow pits; metasomal tergum II with sparse punctation. Clypeus longer than wide, apex truncate; gena narrow, less than half width of eyes; occiput with a small angular projection on each side at top of eye; occipital carina dorsal only, projecting; humeri projecting; tegula more than three times as long as wide, posterior margin obliquely rounded; metanotum compressed; metanotal tubercle absent; propodeal orifice with sides converging, almost pointed dorsally; metasomal tergum I petiolate, transversely widened posteriorly, with a distinct preapical transverse carina; tergum II with a distinct apico-discal prominence.
Comments. The holotype female is from PANAMA ( Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali di Torino —MIZSU, Turin), however, as a fire destroyed part of the MIZSU, probably the holotype is lost. Hence, the material from the NHM and AMNH is important, they are some of the only specimens collected of this species. Richards (1978) says: “only known from the holotype described from the Rio Cianati, on the Pacific shore of Panama. It was seen by Ducke. It appears to be distinct.”
Additional material examined: COLOMBIA: Sucre , Coloso, 09º30’N- 75º21’W, 31.i.1976, F Schremmer (col.), Museum label: NHMUK 010817937 (♀ NHM) GoogleMaps . ECUADOR: Pichincha, Puerto Quito , 200 m, 03.vi.1987, Cooper (col.) (♀ AMNH).
Distribution ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ): Panama; Colombia: Sucre; Ecuador *: Pichincha .
