Centris inermis Friese, 1899 View in CoL

Centris inermis Friese, 1899: 46 View in CoL . Junior synonym of C. varia ( Erichson, 1848) ( Roig-Alsina 2000) View in CoL .

Type data: Friese (1899) described this species from a very large series of specimens of both sexes collected in Mexico (Orizaba) and Brazil. In 1969, Moure designated the lectotype, but he did not provide any data or even the sex of the specimen that help to recognize it. Some of the specimens from Orizaba studied by Friese were found in the MNHP, but unfortunately, none labeled as lectotype.Anyway, all those specimens are conspecific and they agree with the current interpretation of C. varia .

Type locality: Mexico: Veracruz state: Orizaba .

Comment: Centris varia is highly variable in the coloration of the integument and the pubescence. Both sexes have dichromatic forms with intermediary forms between them. In addition, in this species there are metander males which are totally different in size, coloration and pubescence. All these variations are reflected in the large number of junior synonyms of this species (see Moure et al. 2007).
