Macronema subaequale Banks 1920: 355 [type locality: Argentina, Missiones, Haut Parana, San Ignacio; MCZ; ♂]; Fischer 1963: 163 [bibliography, distribution]; Flint 1967: 11, 32 [♂].

Macrostemum subaequale (Banks 1920) ; Flint et al. 1999: 68 [taxonomic notes; distribution]; Paprocki et al. 2004: 8 [distribution].

The holotype of this species was not available for study and specimens were not examined. The information for this species is from Banks (1920) and Flint (1967). The male genitalia illustrations were redrawn from Flint (1967).

Synopsis. Adults. Forewing length 22 mm. Head golden, with golden setae and vertex black. Scapes black. Maxillary palps black at base, pale beyond; second, third, and fourth joints short, subequal. Prothorax black. Meso- and metathorax black. Legs yellow, with tips of tarsi dark. Forewings dark brown, each with two large, costal, yellow spots, one beyond middle, other near stigmal region; discoidal cell present.

Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX, in lateral view, with anterior and posterior margins sinuous; posterior margin deeply notched, bordered by long setae above and below notch ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 A). Segment X, in lateral view, subtriangular, apically oblique and rounded, with subbasal wart and subapical region of long setae on each side ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 A). Inferior appendages covered by setae and uniformly wide; each with basal segment about three times length of apical segment and margined with ventral setae and longer setae apically; apical segment with scattered moderately long setae ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 A). Phallus truncate apically in lateral view ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 C); phallotremal sclerite wingshaped, circumscribing 2/3rds of projected circle, with pair of lateral spines and pair of posterior spines ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 B).

Material examined. None. The male holotype was not available for study. The misinterpretation of Brazilian biodiversity protection laws by scientific curators poses obstacles to borrowing biological material from other countries.

Distribution. Argentina.
