Macrostemum surinamense (Flint 1974) View in CoL
Figs. 14 View FIGURE 14 D–G
Macronema surinamense Flint 1974: 108 , Plate 2 [type locality: Surinam, Coppename River, Bakhuis Mountains, camp III; RNH; ♀; wings]; Flint, 1978: 389, 413, 416 [distribution, wings, ♂, Macronema near surinamense ]. Macrostemum surinamense (Flint 1974) ; Flint et al. 1999: 69 [taxonomic notes; distribution]; Paprocki et al. 2004: 8 [distribution].
The holotype of this species was not available for study and specimens were not examined. The information for this species is from Flint (1974, 1978). The male genitalia illustrations were redrawn from Flint (1978).
Synopsis. Adults. Forewing length 13 mm. Head fuscous. Scapes infuscate. Prothorax yellow. Meso- and metathorax fuscous. Forewings brownish-black, with pale golden-yellow markings.
Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX, in lateral view, with anterior margin nearly straight; posterior margin sinuous, shallowly notched, bordered by long setae above and below notch ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 D); in dorsal view, with posterior margin forming medial acuminate keel with long setae bordering right and left margins ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 E);. Segment X, in dorsal view, bilobed, each lobe apically rounded with subapical wart; pair of clusters of small setae at midlength ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 E); in lateral view, subtriangular and rounded apically, with subdorsal cluster of small setae near midlength, subapical wart and cluster of small setae ventrolaterally on each side ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 D). Inferior appendages each with basal segment about same length as apical segment, slightly thicker at 3/2rds length; apical segment slightly clavate ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 D). Phallus arched; apex acuminate in lateral view ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 F); rounded apically in ventral view ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 G).
Material examined. None. The male holotype was not available for study. The misinterpretation of Brazilian biodiversity protection laws by scientific curators poses obstacles to borrowing biological material from other countries.
Distribution. Brazil (AM), and Surinam.
