Macrostemum santaritae (Ulmer 1905a) ; Flint et al. 1999: 68 [taxonomic notes; distribution]; Paprocki et al. 2004: 8 [distribution]; Nogueira & Cabette 2011: 350 [distribution].
The genital apparatus of M. santaeritae resemble those of M. erichsoni , but in this species the anterior margin of abdominal segment IX is rounded in lateral view. The characters that make this species unique include a pair of dorsal processes on the phallotremal sclerite and its trapezoidal shape in ventral view. Furthermore, the anterior wings of M. santaeritae are, in general, almost entirely hyaline.
Synopsis. Adults pinned. Forewing mean length 10.2 mm (9.02–11.5 mm, n=13). Head brownish-yellow, with dark spot on anterior region. Compound eyes brown. Scapes brown on dorsal surface, yellow on ventral surface, with brown setae. Maxillary palps brownish-yellow, with yellow setae. Prothorax yellow or black, with yellow spots on pleural surface. Meso- and metathorax yellow, with brown spots. Legs brownish-yellow. Tibial spur formula 2,4,4. Forewings mostly hyaline, with at least small portion of one dark spot on apical area or with fingershaped dark patch bordering entire apical area; discoidal cell present; radial sector normal ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 A).
Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX, in lateral view, with anterior margin rounded; posterior margin sinuous, deeply notched, bordered by setae above and below notch ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 B); in dorsal view, with posterior margin rounded with long setae bordering right and left margins ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 E);. Segment X, in dorsal view, bilobed, each lobe tapered, blunt, with subapical wart with pair of subdorsal clusters of small setae near midlength; in lateral view, subtriangular, blunt apically, with subdorsal cluster of small setae at midlength, subapical wart, and row of small setae bordering each ventrolateral margin ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 B). Inferior appendages uniformly wide, covered uniformly by small setae; each with basal segment approximately 1.5X length of apical segment and with long ventral setae at base ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 B). Phallus arched; apex acuminate in lateral view ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 C); phallotremal sclerite, trapezoidal, bearing pair of dorsal processes, anterior margin concave, posterior margin nearly straight in middle ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 D); phallotrema rounded, concave, apically positioned on posterodorsal surface of phallus ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 D).
