Basionym: Wislizenia refracta Engelmann (1848: 99) View in CoL .

Type: USA. New Mexico: Rio Grande near Paso del Norte, 08 Aug 1846, F. A. Wislizenus s.n. (holotype: MO 47872; isotype: NY). Heterotypic synonyms: Cleomella coulteri Harvey ex Gray (1853: 16 , nom. nud. in synon.).— Wislizenia scabrida Eastwood (1903: 490) . Type: USA. Arizona: Pima Co., Tucson, 20 Aug 1984, J. W. Toumey s.n. (holotype: CAS 1218; isotypes: ARIZ, NY, UC, US).— Wislizenia costellata Rose ex Greene (1906: 132) . Type: MEXICO. Sonora: Between Nogales and Guaymas, 04 Jun 1897, J. N. Rose 1294 (holotype: US 300114; isotypes: MO, NY, US).— Wislizenia melilotoides Greene (1906: 130) . Wislizenia refracta Engelmann var. melilotoides (Greene) Johnston (1924: 1028) . Type: USA. ARIZONA: Holbrook, 1896, Zuck s.n. (lectotype, confirmed here:

US 349028!; isolectotypes: MO!, NY !).

Note: The original desciption of Wislizenia melilotoides Greene included three syntypes: USA. Arizona: Holbrook, 20 Aug 1883, H. H. Rusby 581 ( NY 00621920!); Arizona: Winslow, 20 Jun 1892, E. O. Wooton s.n. ( NY 00621918!); and Arizona: Holbrook, 04 Aug 1896, M. Zuck s.n. ( MO!, NY 00387735!, US 349028!). Kearney & Peebles (1951: 357) list H. H. Rusby 581 as the type whereas Keller (1979: 349) lists M. Zuck s.n. ( US 349028!) as the holotype. While Kearney & Peebles were the first to designate a type, it is unclear whether they chose the type based on its appearance as the first collection in the list of syntypes. Green (1906: 130) clearly notes that the Zuck collections are the “most perfect specimens,” and this leads us to accept the position of Keller (1979: 349) that the US specimen collected by Zuck is the proper lectotype.
