3.3. Frangula palaeofrangula (Andreánszky) Doweld , comb. nov.

Basionym:— Rhamnus palaeofrangula Andreánszky (1963: 249 , text-fig. 8).

Type:— BP 62.1202.1 [formerly 20.955] (Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, Hungary).

Synonyms:— Frangula rhamnoides (Rossmässler) Stephyrtza (1987: 1199) , excl. typo; Frangula rossmaessleri ( Unger 1850: 464) Budantsev & Sveshnikova (1964: 106) , nom. superfl. & illeg., excl. typo.

Geography:—Csillaghegy, Budapest, Hungary.

Stratigraphy:—Lower Oligocene (Rupelian).

Status:—Leaves.

IFPNI registration record:— F0089420-21F7-4144-8A1C-7AEDA8CC5BF8.

Note:—The fossil-species is compared with extant Frangula alnus Miller (1754) .Two more fossil species were originally described as counterparts of extant species Frangula alnus : Frangula rossmaessleri and Rhamnus subdentata Saporta (1867: 108) . The fossil-species of Saporta, being compared with Frangula alnus , was never figured and its identity or relationships with other fossil and extant species are remained dubious. Frangula rossmaessleri , when published, was nomenclaturally superfluous since it was based on Rhamnus rossmaessleri , an illegitimate and nomenclaturally superfluous renaming of the previously validly published Phyllites rhamnoides Rossmässler (1840: 35 , pl. 8, figs 30–31) [Unger superfluously proposed a new species epithet instead to adopt the earlier available species name]. Recently Kvaček & Walther (1988: 405) re-studied original materials of Rossmässler (1840) and came to conclusion that they are fagaceous fossil remains of a distinct fossil-genus Trigonobalanopsis Kvaček & Walther (1988: 405). Later attributions of fossil remains to either Phyllites rhamnoides or more widely known Rhamnus rossmaessleri have nothing in common with the originals of Rossmässler. If Rhamnus subdentata is treated as dubious since never re-collected or recorded anywhere in the Tertiary European palaeofloras after original description of Saporta in 1867, the fossil leaf remains known as Rhamnus rossmaessleri , Frangula rossmaessleri , or correctly recombined Frangula rhamnoides should be attributed to the fossil-species Rhamnus palaeofrangula .
