Pholcus Walckenaer 1805: 80 View in CoL . Type species Aranea phalangioides Fuesslin, 1775 , by monotypy.
Diagnosis. This genus can usually be distinguished from all known genera of the subfamily Pholcinae by the presence of three pairs of apophyses (proximo-lateral, proximo-frontal, and disto-frontal; Figs 34 View FIGURES 34 – 39 , 42 View FIGURES 40 – 43 ) on the male chelicerae, by the presence of a bulbal uncus and appendix ( Figs 30 View FIGURES 30 – 33 , 40 View FIGURES 40 – 43 ), and by the presence of a ‘knob’ on the usually sclerotized epigyne ( Huber 2011a; see also Huber 2011a for a discussion on diagnostic characters in Pholcus , and reversals in some taxa).
