Upright, terrestrial herbs or shrubs up to 1 m tall, occasionally slightly scandent. Stem densely hirtellous, covered by dark or hyaline indumentum. Petiole (0.5–)1.0– 2.5 cm long, densely hirtellous; blade ovate, elliptic or, rarely, narrowly obovate, (7–)8–14(–22) × (4–)5–7(–8) cm, bullate, sparsely hirtellous above, densely hirtellous with dark or hyaline trichomes beneath, base slightly asymmetric, cuneate, apex acute to acuminate, margin subentire to slightly toothed, with 20 to 40 minute (<2 mm long) teeth per side, hydathodes one or two per cm, marginal to intramarginal, secondary veins 9 to 11 per side, higher order veins reticulate, intramarginal vein lacking. Peduncle (3–) 4–6 cm long densely hirtellous, with two filiform bracteoles, 4–6 mm long each. Hypanthium subglobose, 5–7 × 5–6 mm, densely hirtellous. Calyx lobes lanceolate, (11–)13–16 × 1–3 mm, patent, hirtellous, basally spaced by sinuses 1‒2 mm wide, margin subentire or with 3 or 4 teeth per side. Corolla green-yellow externally, white-green internally, hirtellous with dark or hyaline trichomes; tube 1.1–1.5 cm long, 3–4 mm in diameter at its mid-level, slightly inflated proximally and distally, lobes ovate, falcate, apex acute, dorsal lobes 10–11 × 3–4 mm, lateral lobes 5–7 × 2–4 mm, ventral lobe 4–5 × 4 mm. Synandrium 2.1–2.6 cm long, exserted up to 5–6 mm; filament tube 1.8–2.1 cm long, glabrous; anther tube 3‒5 mm long, hirtellous, ventral anthers sparsely puberulous, barbate, with an apical tuft of white woolly trichomes up to 2 mm long. Berries globose, 0.7–1.0 × 0.7‒1.0 cm, not inflated, densely hirtellous, green.
Phenology: — Burmeistera nigropilosa sets flowers and fruits throughout most of the year.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera nigropilosa is known from the Western and Central cordilleras, in the departments of Antioquia, Chocó, Córdoba and Valle del Cauca. It occurs in the understory stratum of cloud, low montane forests, and in disturbed oak forests, at elevations between 800 and 2700 m. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, this species qualifies for the Near Threatened (NT) category.
Notes: — Burmeistera nigropilosa is closely related to B. bullatifolia (see differential traits under the latter).
