Shrubs up to 3 m tall. Stem hirtellous. Petiole 0.8–1.5 cm long, hirtellous; blade obovate to elliptic, 15–17 × 5–6 cm, glabrous to scarcely puberulous above, hirtellous beneath, base cuneate, apex obtuse, shortly acuminate, margin slightly toothed especially on the distal half, with one or two hydathodes per cm, secondary veins 9 or 10 per side, intramarginal vein lacking. Flowers crowded at the distal portion of the twig forming a corymbiform ending. Peduncle 5‒7 cm long, glabrous, with one minute trilobed bracteole at its base. Hypanthium globose, 6–8 × 6–8 mm, glabrescent. Calyx lobes narrowly oblong, 6.8–7.4 × 2.0– 2.2 mm, ascending, basally contiguous, margin with two to four small teeth per side, apex obtuse. Corolla pink to green, glabrous; tube 2.2–2.7 cm long, 2.0– 2.5 mm diameter at its mid-level, slightly inflated proximally and distally; lobes ovate-lanceolate, falcate, apex obtuse, dorsal lobes 7–8 × 2.6–3.2 mm, lateral lobes 7.0–7.5 × 2.8–3.2 mm, ventral lobe 4.0–4.2 × 3.0– 3.1 mm. Synandrium 3.0– 3.5 cm long, exserted up to ca. 8 mm; filament tube 2.6–2.8 cm long, glabrescent; anther tube 4–7 mm long, glabrescent except for the apically barbate ventral anthers. Fruits unknown.
Phenology: — Burmeistera mutisiana has been collected with flowers and fruits in April, August, October and November.
Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera mutisiana is restricted to the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, in the departments of Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Norte de Santander, and Santander. It occurs in cloud florests at elevations between 1980 and 2900 m. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, this species qualifies for the Near Threatened (NT) category.
Notes: — Burmeistera mutisiana is similar to B. fuchsioides (see distinctive traits under the latter).
The protologue of the basionym Lobelia mutisiana, Kunth (1820) did not explicitly indicate a specimen or illustration as the original material of the species. Thus, the specimen housed in the Humbold and Bonpland herbarium in P [ P00671028 ] is here designated as the neotype. This specimen consistently represents the traits mentioned in the protologue, and has an original, handwritten identification “ Lobelia mutisiana ” with the number “13”, which corresponds to the species number in Kunth´s (1820) treatment .
In the protologue, Kunth (1820) mentioned that Burmeistera mutisiana is similar to Lobelia glabrata (= Burmeistera glabrata ). The illustration 28 published in the Flora de la Real Expedición Botánica al Nuevo Reino de Granada ( Díaz 1985) inequivocally corresponds to Burmeistera (Lobelia) mutisiana , but it was misidentified as B. pennellii Gleason. A careful cross-comparison of the protologue of B. pennellii versus the aforementioned illustration of B. mutisiana is conclusive in that the illustration corresponds to the latter.
