Lavatera maritima var. purpurea

Maire (1935: 195) described the new var. purpurea on the basis of the colours of the petals (purple with claw darkpurple); the habitat (“ Rochers maritimes ”), and the provenance (“ Cap Falcon à l’W d’Oran ”) were also provided. I found one specimen at MPU ( Maire’s collection no. 003360) that bears a plant collected by R. Maire on March, 24 1934 “ in rupibus maritimus promontori Falcon prov. oranensis”. A second sheet is preserved at P (“HERBIER MAIRE: in rupibus maritimus promontori Falcon prov. Oranensis, 24-3-1934 ”). Both exsiccata can be considered part of the original material, match the diagnosis: the MPU specimen is here designated as the lectotype of the name L. maritima var. purpurea , while P specimen is a isolectotype. On the top of the sheet at MPU there is another recent label (dated in 29 June 2004) in which the contributor (unnamed) stated “ Holotype ”. However, Maire (1935) has not clearly indicated any specimen in the protologue, so the holotype was not defined, and a lectotype has to be selected (see Arts. 9.1 and 9.2 of ICN) .
